Kashmir in November: weather, packing and a 5-day plan

November is Kashmir between seasons: chinar colour in Srinagar, the first snow in the mountains and quieter roads. Here is what to expect and how to plan it.

By early November the summer crowds have gone home. Shikaras still glide across Dal Lake, but the boatmen now wear pherans. Smoke from wood stoves drifts over the old city in the evening, the chinars are at their reddest, and on clear days the peaks above Gulmarg wear their first coat of white.

Kashmir in November is a month of two halves: late autumn in the valley and early winter in the mountains. If you like clear skies, colour and space to breathe, it is one of the best times of the year to come.

Kashmir weather in November

Expect bright, dry days and cold nights. As a rough guide for Srinagar:

  • Early November: pleasant, sunny afternoons; cold mornings and evenings.
  • Late November: cool days and nights close to freezing, with frost on the lawns at dawn.
  • Higher up: Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are several degrees colder than Srinagar, and the first snowfall often arrives in the second half of the month — though some years it waits until December.

Rain is less frequent than in spring, which makes November one of the most reliable months for clear views of the mountains.

What is special about November

The tail of chinar season

The first two weeks of November are usually the peak of the autumn colours. Naseem Bagh, Nishat, Shalimar and the Jhelum banks are at their best. Read our chinar season guide for the best spots.

The saffron harvest

At Pampore, on the road south of Srinagar, the saffron crocus flowers from late October into early November. Families pick the purple blooms by hand in the early morning. Stop on the way to Pahalgam and buy saffron directly from a grower you trust.

The first snow

If you have never seen snow fall, November gives you a chance without the deep cold of January. Gulmarg is the most likely place to see it. Nothing is guaranteed, so we keep one flexible day in November plans to go up when the forecast looks right.

Fewer people, better rates

Between the Diwali holidays and the Christmas rush, hotels and houseboats are quieter. You often get better rooms, calmer gardens and shorter queues at the Gulmarg Gondola.

What to pack for Kashmir in November

  • A warm down or padded jacket for evenings and mountain days
  • Two or three warm layers (fleece or wool) rather than one heavy sweater
  • Thermal innerwear for Gulmarg and Sonamarg, and for late-November nights
  • Waterproof walking shoes with good grip; snow boots can be rented in Gulmarg
  • Gloves, a woollen cap and a scarf
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — the autumn sun is strong at altitude
  • Moisturiser and lip balm for the dry air

Is everything open in November?

The main destinations — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri — are open and reachable by road. A few things change as winter approaches:

  • The Srinagar–Leh road over Zojila usually stays open into November but can close after heavy snow, and closes for the winter by December. If Ladakh is part of your plan, fly to Leh.
  • High trails and meadows may close early after snowfall.
  • The Gulmarg Gondola runs, but the upper phase can pause for strong winds or maintenance. We check on the day.
  • Gurez is beautiful in autumn but the road over Razdan Pass can shut after the first heavy snow.

A 5-day Kashmir itinerary for November

  1. Day 1 – Arrive in Srinagar. Settle into a houseboat or lakeside hotel. Sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake with kahwa on board.
  2. Day 2 – Gulmarg. Drive about two hours to Gulmarg. Ride the Gondola if the weather is clear, walk in the meadow, and look for the first snow. Return to Srinagar or stay the night.
  3. Day 3 – Sonamarg. Follow the Sindh river to Sonamarg, with views of the Thajiwas glacier and the valley turning gold. Back in Srinagar by evening.
  4. Day 4 – Pahalgam via Pampore. Stop at the saffron fields and the Avantipora temple ruins, then spend the afternoon by the Lidder river.
  5. Day 5 – Srinagar gardens and departure. Naseem Bagh or Nishat in the morning light, then the airport.

This plan works well for couples, families and first-time visitors. Our Kashmir Classic covers the same ground, or you can shape your own version on Create Your Trip.

Who should visit Kashmir in November?

  • Photographers and walkers who want colour, clear light and empty gardens.
  • Couples looking for a quiet, romantic trip before peak winter prices.
  • First-timers who want to see the valley and the mountains in one trip without deep snow.
  • Families travelling over Diwali or a long weekend.

If you are coming mainly for skiing or a white Gulmarg, wait for late December to February. If you want the valley at its most beautiful, November is hard to beat.
